Ed Kashi, Rev. Richard Ames of the Newtown Church of Christ believed the coming of Saturn would tear down some of those hidden racial walls. Blacks would finally be able to move out of the slums of Newtown, the black neighborhood of Spring Hill and move more into the mainstream. In 1980 the population of Spring Hill, Tennessee was around 800-900 residents. In 1985, General Motors announced its intentions to build a Saturn manufacturing facility in Spring Hill. The anticipated arrival of this factory impacted the city severely, propelling this small town from the 19th to the 21st century and quadrupling its population. The new population propelled fast changes in this once small town, creating a new crop of wealthy and many more who lost everything.
